Mulan (2020) takes the beloved animated classic and gives it a more grounded, action-packed makeover. Gone are the musical numbers and talking dragon—this version aims for something more serious and cinematic. And while it’s definitely different, it’s also bold in its own way.

Liu Yifei stars as Mulan, and she brings quiet strength and intensity to the role. Her journey—from hiding her true self to embracing her power—is inspiring, even if the story skips some of the emotional depth of the original.

Visually, the film is stunning. The battle scenes are beautifully choreographed, and the landscapes are pure eye candy. Plus, there’s more martial arts and dramatic flair, giving it that epic wuxia feel.

But it’s not perfect. Some fans missed the heart and humor of the 1998 version, and the lack of songs or Mushu definitely shifts the tone. Still, the film’s focus on honor, loyalty, and inner strength shines through.
